Significance of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is one of the most revered pilgrimages in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon religion. Mount Kailash is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva, and circumambulating (Kora) around it is considered to bring spiritual merit and liberation. Lake Mansarovar, located at an altitude of 4,590m, is believed to cleanse sins and bestow blessings upon pilgrims who take a holy dip. The yatra offers not only a religious experience but also a chance to witness the pristine beauty of Tibet’s rugged landscapes.

Journey Details

The journey begins in Kathmandu and proceeds through Syabrubesi to Tibet via the Nepal-Tibet border at Kerung. The trip involves extensive driving across the high-altitude Tibetan plateau, with ample time for acclimatization. Pilgrims trek around Mount Kailash over three days, passing through challenging terrains, including the high-altitude Drolma La Pass (5,645m). After completing the Parikrama, the journey retraces back to Nepal, concluding in Kathmandu.

Challenges of the Yatra

  • High Altitude Sickness: The journey takes travelers to altitudes above 5,000m, requiring acclimatization.
  • Trekking Challenges: The 52 km Kailash Parikrama involves steep ascents and descents, making it physically demanding.
  • Weather Conditions: The unpredictable climate of Tibet can range from freezing cold to strong winds.
  • Limited Facilities: Accommodations in remote areas may be basic, and medical facilities are scarce.
  • Border Regulations: Tibet travel permits and visa processing may cause delays.

Why Nepali Should Go on This Pilgrimage

For Nepali pilgrims, Kailash Mansarovar holds immense religious and cultural significance. As Nepal shares close geographical proximity to Tibet, it is easier for Nepalis to access the holy site compared to many international pilgrims. This yatra not only deepens spiritual connections but also provides an opportunity to experience the sacred Himalayas up close.
